The scent and markings on the coffee filter are all unique according to the time and space. With this distinct uniqueness an ambiguous form is made. Some might think it’s a flower (an unknown flower), others as a genital covered by something (female in particular). Some say it looks like a fruit seed. The Timescape series that I am working on is the result of an action (watering the coffee filter everyday). It is completed in harmony of the natural phenomenon occurring as time flows, and the artist’s intervention.
A particular result comes from different amount and temperature of the water, as well as the room temperature and humidity in the studio. I captured with my camera the beautiful but momentary scenery of coffee filters, which coffee lovers all over the world miss by throwing them away.
cf series-- started last spring(2010~) when someone brought a present to my studio. Though I had some memories with coffee during my studies in France, I didn’t actually enjoy it.
After I came back to Korea, I never knew I would brew coffee, and that it would turn out to be my work. I was fascinated by the beauty and strangeness of coffee filters when they dried up. Since then, I started my day in the studio brewing coffee and watering the filters I’ve collected. The aroma of coffee soaks into every corner of my studio and traces of time are piled up in layers. Furthermore, I am starting to be drawn by other traces and shapes.
